At the end of a long work day, it's easy to throw on Netflix and zone out until its time to go to bed. And some nights that's exactly what we need.

But what about the moments you're looking to feel more engaged and connected to yourself and your community?

Since the onset of the pandemic, there has been a resurgence in hobbies and 3 years later, they're continuing to help people find joy and connection in their lives.

Here are hobbies and activities to try in the new year if you're looking to find some balance in your day-to-day life, take a break from screens, connect with your community, and pick up some new skills along the way.

Get crafty

Embroidery: Not just for the Countess of Grantham on Downton Abbey. Embroidery is a great craft to keep your hands busy all while feeling fancy and sophisticated. Embroidery teaches you how to make a variety of knots and patterns with thread to create beautiful art pieces or embellish things you already have like clothes and linens. There are a ton of free resources online, like this YouTube video, to help you get started!

Painting: To quote the iconic Bob Ross, “I think there’s an artist hidden at the bottom of every single one of us.” Get your easel ready and channel your inner artist! Painting is a great activity to cultivate mindfulness, stretch your creative muscles, and disconnect from screens. And while you're painting be sure to remember, "There are no mistakes, just happy accidents.” Get inspired and find tutorials on the Bob Ross YouTube Channel!

Get physical (and then nourish!)

Whether you want to try a variety of new classes, or you've always wanted to master a certain fitness skill (like yoga or pilates) there are so many options to help you get moving in a way that feels good for you. Not sure where to start? Go back to basics with a gentle walk outdoors after work and feel the benefits.
